music aids in building the atmosphere for my paintings most of the time. it's almost a requirement, or else i can't work properly. of course, there are some times where i do want to watch something while i paint, or play some ambient sounds, or sit in silence for a while when i finally reach the flow state. however, i always come back to playing some music to help me along the journey.
a lot of the music i tend to gravitate towards, aside from the jumbled mess that is my neuroplasticity for painting playlist on spotify — neuroplasticity and ways to increase it being something i think has helped improve my art immensely over the past year or two — tends to be primarily shoegaze, dreampop, and slowcore. my playlist, dazecore is a large and growing list of all my favourite songs within or adjacent to these genres. i find myself always coming back to these songs when i need to focus and when i need help capturing an atmosphere.
i am, begrudgingly, a bit of a dreamer. i live in nostalgia and in a state of longing and yearning, which most of the time can be boiled down to human connection. like writing, i use visual art as a means of vicariously living through, creating worlds and scenarios i would have a slim to none chance living out anyway. even when my art isn't personal, it is. i hold it all close, some more than others, regardless if i end up hating it or not.
